Professor Hoi Sing Kwok, Executive Director of SKL and Dr. William M W Mong Professor of Nanotechnology and Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at HKUST, is an authority on display technology and nanotechnology. Prof. Kwok holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University and Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Applied Physics from Harvard University. From 1978 to 1980, he worked at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. From 1980 to 1992, he was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, State University of New York at Buffalo, where he became a Full Professor since 1985. Since joining HKUST in 1992, Prof. Kwok also currently serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Display Research at HKUST.

Prof. Kwok ’s major research interests are in Display technologies, Liquid crystal display (LCD), Nano-optics, Nanotechnology, Thin film. Multi-disciplinary Themes: Display and Sensors Everywhere (DSE) and Ecotronics and Green ICT (EGI).Prof. Kwok has published over 1000 papers and received over 100 international patents. He has written 3 monographs and edited 8 Conference Proceedings and books.

Prof. Kwok is a Fellow of The Optical Society (OSA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Society for Information Display (SID), and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES). He is also an elected member of the Asia Pacific Academy of Materials (APAM). Professor Kwok has received numerous awards, including the US President Young Investigator Award in 1984 and the SUNY Distinguished Professional Award in 1991.. He was given the Slotto-Owaki Award and the Rajchman Prize from SID is 2013 and 2019 respectively. During 2020, Prof. Kwok named a Fellow of National Academy of Inventors(NAI).Election to NAI Fellow is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.
